The greater the loyalty of a group toward the group, the greater is the motivation among the members to achieve the goals of the group, and the greater the probability that the group will achieve its goals.

Kids in Action

I know we all have kids that we’re proud of, but . . . .

For those of you who have not been involved with this from the get-go, Riley, my nine-year-old, and his buddy, Macy Molsbee, built a cow dog box and took it to the San Antonio Livestock Show this past weekend.  It is made of 10 gauge diamond plate steel, and is designed to haul dogs in the back of a pickup.  It has a built in water box, two dog kennels with air vents, and four storage compartments.

The livestock division at San Antonio is divided into three or four different classes.  Riley and Macy took fourth in their class.  They got a gift certificate to AirGas for that.  AirGas is a welding supply company.  They got beat by a portable equine dentistry rack for vets that was hydraulic powered, and a USDA sponsored portable dipping vat that took up one whole end of the barn.

There were over 700 projects in San Antonio including trailers, tractors, chutes, gates, and all things wildlife, most of which were built, and shown, by high school students.  ALL were eligible for a showmanship award.  Five awards were given.  Macy’s older sister got the 1st place showmanship award and these guys took fifth!!!  Morgan also took 1st in the wildlife class with her project.  She’s 10.  Chris and I hauled back all the awards yesterday – it filled the back of our truck!!

Chris and I are very proud of all our Alpine kids!!

We take our dog box to San Angelo tomorrow to see what we can do there.

Summer Intern Job Announcement

The Texas USDA, Farm Service Agency has been approved to hire 2 summer interns.  The location will depend on who is selected, where they prefer to be, and what offices are nearby. Attached is the vacancy announcement for Texas.  Students MUST submit all required material to be considered.  Unfortunately many good applicants are disqualified because they have not submitted all the requirements.  If you are interested, please review the information contained in the link below.  Also included in the link are job vacancy announcements for many other locations around the country. This is a great opportunity for summer jobs.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Bill McAnally at bill.mcanally@tx.usda.gov or (432) 336-5206, extension 2.

 Scholarships

Since 2001, your Association has provided over $85,000 in scholarships and has accrued approximately $20,000 in a permanent scholarship fund to provide future full four-year scholarships. Half of the scholarships are awarded as academic scholarships and half as rodeo scholarships.  Recipients for these scholarships are selected by the Dean of ANRS and, in the case of the Rodeo Scholarships, recommended by the Rodeo Coach.
