Marty attended Sul Ross from 1984-1991 – as a matter of fact, he was at Sul Ross when many of us showed up and was still there after many of us left – I think he loved ol’ Sully a lot! Marty received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Industrial Technology and was involved in many activities including the Rodeo Club and Clip and Brand.
Marty was very active in the Rodeo Club, serving as both Vice President and Team Roping Director throughout his years at Sul Ross. After graduation, Marty became involved as a Director and Officer of the ANRS & Rodeo Exes Association and is the primary reason why a Reunion was even held in 2001, making many of the arrangements driving to Alpine for the Reunion. As a Director and Vice President Marty was present at more meetings than many of the other Board members – even though he drove from (and back to) Ozona. He was absolutely instrumental in the redevelopment of the Exes from a once a year roping and get together to what we are, and are still becoming, today. Marty loved helping everyone – he provided sheep for the mutton busting at the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo for several years. If he knew you needed help, he would just show up.
Marty was in Who’s Who many of his years at Sul Ross, and was selected as “Man of the Year” in 1989. After graduation, Marty entered the family ranching business and become well known and respected throughout the West Texas ranching community. He was a dedicated supporter of multiple youth programs and Rodeo Cowboy ministries. He was also an active member of the Farm Bureau, Farm Service Agency County Committee, Crockett County Soil & Water Conservation District, and San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Foundation. Marty died suddenly at age 42 on July 19, 2008, while participating in one of his favorite pastimes, ranch rodeo steer roping. Marty was the primary reason that I became active in the Exes, and for that, I will always be grateful.

Induction into the Hall of Fame is the highest honor which can be bestowed on an individual by the ANRS & Rodeo Exes Association. This honor is for ANRS graduates or friends and recognizes those who have represented the Association, the ANRS Department, or Sul Ross State University with distinction through their personal and/or professional achievements which brought honor to our University. Nominations may be submitted by any member at any time. The ANRS & Rodeo Exes Board of Directors will periodically review nominations and determines inductees into the Hall of Fame. Inductions are not necessarily held annually, but rather when a sufficient pool of inductees is obtained. The induction ceremony is at the Annual Reunion held the last weekend of July in Alpine.
Make a nomination for a deserving individual for induction into the ANRS & Rodeo Exes Hall of Fame!
There is certainly room among these fine individuals for additional honorees. Please give some consideration to nominating a deserving individual for induction into the Hall of Fame.
