Dr. Paul graduated from Alpine High School in
1946. He received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1952 from Texas
A&M University. In 1962
Dr. Paul received a MA from Sul Ross and His PhD at the University
of Wyoming in 1973. Dr.
Paul’s first teaching came in 1957, when Dr. A.J. Bierschwale,
professor in Range Animal Science at Sul Ross talked him into
teaching a class in Livestock Management, “at no pay”.
Later Dr. Barton Warnock hired him to teach botany and
zoology, thus beginning his 37 years at Sul Ross.
Dr. Paul was the sponsor of the rodeo team from
1962 thru 1975 and part of 1976. He was made professor in RAS in
1973 and in 1989 he became the interim director of the department.
In 1990 he was appointed director of the RAS department and
served in this capacity until retirement. “P.R.” received the
Retired Faculty/Staff Award from the SR Exes in 1997.
He was Man of the Year in Texas Agriculture in 1997, elected
to the Big Bend Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2001 and honored by the Big
Bend Livestock Show for his service and support.
He has been with the Texas PCA, Rolling Plains PCA and First
Ag Credit as a director. He has served the Alpine community as
Mayor, councilman and on the Brewster County Appraisal Board for 18
years.
For many years Sul Ross was not blessed with amount of livestock it now presently owns, but when you took one of Dr. Paul’s classes he made sure at least once during that class you had some type of livestock to get your hands on, and probably 90% of the time that animal belonged to him and Beverly. Of course sometimes he didn’t want your grubby hand on the dog or cat he was doing surgery on, but for some reason there was always someone who wanted to be helpful and hold an instrument for him just get their hands inside the sleeping cat. Wonder how many times he had to whack someone while he was doing surgery? But anytime we had a sick horse or roping calves dying, you could call Paul and he would always be there for you. He not only taught us a thing or two, but we had a lot of fun with him as well.

Induction into the Hall of Fame is the highest honor which can be bestowed on an individual by the ANRS & Rodeo Exes Association. This honor is for ANRS graduates or friends and recognizes those who have represented the Association, the ANRS Department, or Sul Ross State University with distinction through their personal and/or professional achievements which brought honor to our University. Nominations may be submitted by any member at any time. The ANRS & Rodeo Exes Board of Directors will periodically review nominations and determines inductees into the Hall of Fame. Inductions are not necessarily held annually, but rather when a sufficient pool of inductees is obtained. The induction ceremony is at the Annual Reunion held the last weekend of July in Alpine.
Make a nomination for a deservation individual for induction into the ANRS & Rodeo Exes Hall of Fame!
There is certainly room among these fine individuals for additional honorees. Please give some consideration to nominating a deserving individual for induction into the Hall of Fame.
