George Mills came to Sul Ross from Sterling County, where he spent a part of his life on a sheep ranch. He and his brother Woodrow won the State 4-H Livestock Judging contest in 1940 and went on to Chicago for the National Contest.  George began college at Texas A&M, but a knee injury sent him to Alpine and Sul Ross.  A.J. Bierschwale had started an Animal Science program here and George knew him from Sterling City.  At Sul Ross he made the freshman livestock judging team, and served as the first President of the Clip and Brand. While enrolled at Sul Ross, George judged the Lamb Show for Brewster County Livestock Show. George worked on the yearbook (The Brand) and chose Range Animal Science as his major. George graduated in the spring of 1947 and in the fall of the same year he married Eva Jean Ferguson.  George and Eva Jean will have been married 58 years this August and for 48 years George managed the Ferguson Ranch.  At the same time, he leased the Sibley Ranch for 35 years.  They raised three children; Marsh Lee Stable of San Antonio, Homer Ferguson Mills of Alpine, and Carol Ann Dacus; who passed away this spring, a great loss to the family and the Alpine community.  George and Eva Jean have two grand children, Kenneth Harris Mills and Amber Dawn Parr and 1 great grandson Brandon Mills Parr.

George served on the Soil and Water Conservation Board, a position he held for 50 years. He served 39 years on the American Soil Conservation Committee. In 1948 he was “drafted” by his mother-in-law to cook for the annual Cemetery Association and did so for 27 years. In 1981 he serves as Chairman of the Alpine Centennial Celebration. He also served 11 years on the Land Bank Board and 10 years on the hospital board. In 1967 he was Outstanding Ranch Conservationist for the local Soil Conservation Service (SCS), in 1982 he was chosen as Alpine Citizen of the Year. The Society for Range management gave him the Excellence in Range Management award in Kerrville.  In 2004 the Big Bend Livestock Show recognized him for his continued support to the youth of this area.

Induction into the Hall of Fame is the highest honor which can be bestowed on an individual by the ANRS & Rodeo Exes Association.  This honor is for ANRS graduates or friends and recognizes those who have represented the Association, the ANRS Department, or Sul Ross State University with distinction through their personal and/or professional achievements which brought honor to our University.  Nominations may be submitted by any member at any time.  The ANRS & Rodeo Exes Board of Directors will periodically review nominations and determines inductees into the Hall of Fame.  Inductions are not necessarily held annually, but rather when a sufficient pool of inductees is obtained.  The induction ceremony is at the Annual Reunion held the last weekend of July in Alpine.

Make a nomination for a deservation individual for induction into the ANRS & Rodeo Exes Hall of Fame!

There is certainly room among these fine individuals for additional honorees.  Please give some consideration to nominating a deserving individual for induction into the Hall of Fame.
